EMERGEnts
Exhibition Statement
EMERGEnts is a group exhibition at the James Barry Exhibition Centre encompassing
over thirty new works from the third year BA undergraduate students of Fine Art at
Crawford College of Art and Design, MTU.
The James Barry Exhibition Centre focusses on supporting and promoting the work of
graduates and early career artists and in developing a understanding between the arts and other study and research areas within MTU. This is the perfect environment and ethos to support a group of young artist learners who have emerged from a time of deep restriction, into a fully immersed process of art making, production and critique in a studio environment.
This collection of artworks is both the product of this process and a celebration of it.
It’s an exciting time as the work on exhibition represents the materialization of a new
collection of artists personal directions, new points of view and individual exploration
across a broad range of media and processes from painting and lens-based media to
sculptural objects.
Curator Eamonn Maxwell will open the exhibition on Monday 4 th April at 1.30pm.
Eamonn has worked as a curator and advisor in the visual arts for over 20 years. He
has curated numerous exhibitions across the world including the Irish Pavilion at the
Venice Biennale in 2011. From 2009 – 2016 he was Director of Lismore Castle Arts,
where he programmed significant exhibitions by leading international and Irish artists.
He is the collection adviser to the Arts Council of Ireland, Goldsmiths College London
and private collectors.
The exhibition at the James Barry Exhibition Centre runs until Friday 8 th April. From
Tuesday to Friday there is also an opportunity to meet a small number of the artists
each day, from 1pm to 1.30pm, when they will speak about their own work and process, in the context of the group show.
